Using data to improve road safety: Initiative for safe roads and HUK-COBURG work together

Bonn/Coburg, 29.2.2024

Initiative für sichere Straßen GmbH and HUK-COBURG have signed a cooperation agreement. HUK-COBURG is now supplying anonymized driving data from its telematics tariff to the Bonn-based road safety initiative. The aim is to use data analysis to identify potential danger spots at an early stage and warn road users in order to prevent accidents as far as possible.

More than 500,000 customers currently use HUK-COBURG’s telematics tariff. The recorded driving data is used to calculate a discount on the car insurance premium. In aggregated and anonymized form, this data, which is collected on braking behaviour, for example, also provides information on danger spots in traffic. These findings are now being incorporated into a map that can be accessed at www.gefahrenstellen.de. There, road users can find out about particularly accident-prone areas.

“After two years of successful collaboration within the framework of research projects, we are pleased to be expanding our cooperation,” says Dr. Jörg Rheinländer, member of the HUK-COBURG Board of Management. “This shows the benefits of big data: everyone who uses our telematics tariff can help to make traffic a little safer,” adds Rheinländer.

In addition, the initiative would like to use these findings to inform the relevant authorities so that structural or other measures can be taken to eliminate the danger if necessary. “Telematics data closes an important gap in the detection of danger spots, as it helps to identify problems at an early stage before people are harmed,” explains Arno Wolter, Managing Director of Initiative für sichere Straßen GmbH. “Since our foundation, we have been committed to greater safety in traffic in order to get a little closer to Vision Zero,” says Wolter, explaining the reasons for the commitment.

The telematics data is transmitted anonymously in compliance with data protection regulations. It is therefore not possible to draw conclusions about individuals.
